Guide

What are UTM parameters?

UTM parameters are small tags added to the end of a link. They tell Google Analytics where a visitor came from — for example, which Instagram story or WhatsApp broadcast.

The three you always need

  • Source: the platform — instagram, facebook, whatsapp, google
  • Medium: the type — social, story, broadcast, paid
  • Campaign: the name — diwali_2026, new_collection

Keep a naming habit

Use lowercase and underscores, and keep names consistent. "Instagram", "instagram" and "IG" will show up as three different sources in your reports.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I see UTM results?

In Google Analytics 4, under Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition, using session source, medium and campaign.

Do UTM links affect SEO?

No. They only add tracking information for your analytics.

Can I shorten UTM links?

Yes. You can use a link shortener, and the tracking still works.
