How to Increase Your Brand's Presence on Social Media: What a Decade in the Industry Has Taught Us

Quick answer

Social media presence grows from a few unglamorous habits done for months: post consistently, stick to three or four clear content pillars, show real people, use the formats the platform is pushing, reply to every comment and message, and review your numbers monthly to do more of what works.

We have been doing this for more than a decade. In that time the platforms have changed their algorithms more times than we can count, formats have come and gone, and every year someone announces a new "hack". What has not changed is the short list of things that genuinely grow a brand's presence. Here it is.

1. Consistency beats intensity

The brands we have seen grow are rarely the ones that post ten times in a week and then disappear for a month. They are the ones that post four or five times a week, every week, for a year. Algorithms reward accounts that show up predictably, and so do people. Pick a rhythm you can sustain with your current team and protect it.

2. Decide what you stand for: three or four content pillars

When a brand tries to post about everything, its feed says nothing. We start every account with three or four pillars — for example product, process, people and proof. Every post should sit inside one of them. Pillars make planning faster, and they teach your audience what to expect from you.

3. Put faces on the brand

People follow people. Posts featuring a founder, a craftsperson, a teacher or a store manager almost always outperform a polished product shot on its own. You do not need everyone to become an influencer — you need a few familiar faces that appear regularly.

4. Use the formats the platform is pushing

On Instagram, short-form video is still the main way new people discover you, while carousels are where people save and share. Stories keep your existing followers close. A healthy week usually mixes all three. Do not abandon a format after two attempts — give it a month.

5. Hooks matter more than production

The first second of a reel decides whether anyone sees the rest. A clear on-screen line, a surprising visual or a direct question does more than an expensive camera. Some of the best-performing content we have made was shot on a phone in ten minutes, with a strong opening.

6. Reply to everyone

Presence is a conversation, not a broadcast. Reply to comments within a few hours, answer DMs the same day and engage with the accounts your customers follow. We have watched community management alone change how an account feels — and how much reach it gets.

7. Borrow audiences

Collaborations with complementary brands, local creators and your own customers put you in front of people who would never have found you. A single well-chosen collaboration can do more than a month of posting to an empty room.

8. Review monthly and adjust

Once a month, look at your top five and bottom five posts by reach, saves, shares and enquiries. Ask what the top ones have in common, and make more of that. Growth is rarely one big idea; it is a hundred small adjustments.

What we would tell any founder

There is no shortcut, but there is a system. Plan in pillars, show up consistently, show the people behind the brand and listen to your numbers. Do that for six months and your presence will look very different.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to grow on social media?

Most brands see clear momentum after three to six months of consistent, planned posting. The first month is usually spent finding what resonates.

How many times a week should a brand post?

Four to five quality posts a week plus regular stories is a good starting point for most brands. Consistency matters more than volume.

Do I need expensive production to grow?

No. Strong hooks, real people and consistency matter more. Many high-performing reels are shot on a phone.
